Ordering Rifle Stocks

Q: How do I know which rifle stock I need?
A: The right stock depends on:

  • Your rifle make and model

  • The shooting discipline you take part in (benchrest, target, varmint, sporter, etc.)

  • Your personal comfort and fit requirements

If you’re unsure, get in touch via our contact page and we’ll be happy to guide you.

Q: How do I check what rifle I have?
A: Most rifles will have the make and model stamped on the action or barrel (e.g. CZ 455, Tikka T3, Remington 700). If you’re unsure, a quick photo of the action or markings sent to us will help us identify it.

Q: What is a flat top stock?
A: A flat top stock does not have the channel cut for the barrel or the fitting for the action. This allows your gunsmith to use your action to fit the stock exactly, including fibreglass bedding if required. Inletting without the exact action may not result in an exact fit as individual actions vary. Some gunsmiths will prefer to start from scratch with a flat top, some may want the initial inlet already completed. Asking them this question is a good first step.

Q: What is inletting and why is it important?
A: Inletting is the cut-out in the stock that holds your rifle’s action and barrel. It must match your rifle exactly. Correct inletting ensures a secure fit, consistent accuracy, and safe operation. Final fitting by a gunsmith is still required even with inlet rifles as each rifle will vary slightly in the inlet geometry. The inlet may need to be further fitted for your rifle and is not safe to use without inspection by a gunsmith. Gunstocks Ltd. can not accept responsibility for any consequences occurring due to an incorrectly fitting action.

Q: How do I know which inletting I need?
A: It depends entirely on your rifle action, common actions are listed below:

  • Tikka Inletting – Designed to fit Tikka T3/T3x/T1x actions.

  • CZ Inletting – CZ rimfire actions (e.g. 452, 455, 457) or fullbore actions (e.g. 527, 557, 600).

  • Anschutz Inletting – Precision cut for Anschutz target rifle actions (Match 54, 1903, 1913).

  • Remington 700 – Cut to exact Rem 700 dimensions.

Q: Can you duplicate or copy my existing stock?
A: Yes. We can work from your current stock (even broken ones) and duplicate it with close tolerances. This is often the easiest way to ensure correct inletting.

Q: How do I choose the best stock style for my discipline?
A: Different shooting types benefit from different stock designs:

  • Benchrest – Wide, stable fore-ends for maximum rest contact.

  • Target Rifle / F-Class – Adjustable features for precision and comfort during long matches.

  • Varmint / Sporting – Balanced for field use and ease of handling.

  • Thumbhole Stocks – Offer improved grip and trigger control for some shooters.

If you’re not sure, tell us what kind of shooting you do, and we can recommend the most suitable option.
